5 ways to beat the autumn blues at work after a fun-filled holiday!
Summer is over, the kids go back to school, and your out of
office has been removed. Trying to get back into routine as we return to our
day jobs after the holiday period is always going to be a struggle, so here are
some survival tips.
Be an early bird
The first day back in the office is always going to be a
struggle, especially since you’re still probably in holiday mode. If you’re not
horrendously jet-lagged, try and get a decent night’s sleep, eat a proper
breakfast and try to get to work half an hour early. This extra time can also
ensure you have time to clean up your desk and make an action plan for the
week.
Tackle your inbox
Now for the time-consuming part. Dreaded emails. You may
have only gone away for a week, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get 100s of
emails – (Let’s just hope you remembered to turn your ‘out-of-office’ on!) Try
and delete as much of the junk emails as you can without opening them, because
clicking on them only wastes time you could be spending on the important ones.
Organise your
workload
Once you have tackled your emails, you may find that there
is a fair bit of work to do, and that’s on top of the work you had before your
holiday! A sense of organisation may help you decide what is important, and what
can wait a few extra days. Getting updates from a colleague at work about what
you missed will help you feel more comfortable about where things are at since
you left for your holiday, giving you an idea on how to tackle each task and
how long it will take.
Exercise
You may be surprised, but exercise really does make a
difference in your mood and motivation. Perhaps make time for a small workout
before you crawl into work, giving you a chance to wake up properly instead of
downing endless cups of coffee all morning! Make sure you also make the most of
your break time by going for a walk outside the office. You may have piles of
work to do, but they won’t get done any quicker if you’re helplessly in sloth
mode for the entire afternoon.
Schedule something
fun to do after work
The first day back can feel like a slog. Plan something you
genuinely enjoy for that first post-work evening—even if it’s just watching a favourite
TV show—so you have something to look forward to. It’s not quite as good as a holiday,
but it’s not a bad way to end the day either.
