How to survive your first day back at work after Christmas
We all go through it, the moment your holiday comes to an
end and you have that miserable, panicky feeling in your stomach reminding you
that you’ll be returning to work soon. No one enjoys going back to the office
after a fun-filled break and some of wish there was a way to prevent the
struggle of getting out of bed to do something productive. Luckily, there are a
couple of ways to slowly push you back into routine, and you’ll soon function
normally in your daily rhythm:
1. Choose to see the benefits of post-holiday time.
We are all thinking
it, why can’t we have more time off to laze around all day and eat endless
leftovers? But try and get that thought out of your mind. The good side to the
end of the holidays is that you’ve had the chance to rest, relax and enjoy
yourself.
The rush and busy
few days before Christmas has ended both in work and in the home, therefore the
peaceful and quiet time after the festive season has hopefully given you a well
needed break. Therefore, keep in mind that any break in the routine is good for
the spirit, providing you the chance for a fresh start when starting work again
after the New Year.
2. Make healthy
choices.
You can’t deny it, the Christmas holiday is predominantly
about all the food, leaving you with no choice but to indulge a little bit more
than usual. This isn’t a bad thing at all, but it can leave you feeling a
little out of shape in the nutrition department.
Try and get back to eating and drinking healthily as soon as
possible as it is a good way to enhance your mood, especially for that first
week back. Exercising is also a good way to motivate yourself, therefore
perhaps do a workout before you go to work as you will feel less tired and more
eager to begin the New Year in the office.
3. Prepare well.
Many of us think
about work the day before we return and choose to scan our emails in
preparation for the big day ahead. Some might find this beneficial as you can
get an idea of how busy you’ll be and prepare yourself in the ways you feel
will help, such as making a quick list of what to do or even getting to the
office earlier than usual.
For those who
cleaned their desks before Christmas, it might be hard remembering where you
put any important files or folders. Therefore, take some time to go through
your files and find the ones you will need to prepare yourself for the slow
week ahead. It is advisable to take it one step at a time instead of rushing,
because rushing will only lead to stress.
4. Take it slowly.
One thing to
remember for the first day back is that you won’t be the only one feeling tired
and blue. Energy levels will most likely be low, so don’t feel like you need to
be working at an incredibly fast pace as you’ll only tire yourself quicker.
Ease yourself into
work gently rather than diving headfirst. Creating a to-do list to work from
would be very beneficial, giving you a simple guide to work towards rather than
trying to do too much at once.
