Today is World Environment Day!
The theme for today is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with care”. It clearly highlights that humanity, the environment and the economy functionality ultimately depend upon the care and management of the plant’s natural resources. However, evidence shows that people consume far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.
Many ecosystems on Earth are in critical danger of depletion or irreversible change. This is partly happening from high population growth and economic development. If that doesn’t make you worried, then you should know that by 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same, we will need THREE planets for sustainability. Population is expected to reach 9.6 billion by then, not making matters any better!
World Environment Day not only highlights the issues we will face in the future, but it identifies what more we can do to improve our environment and how to live sustainably. ‘Consuming with care’ means living within planetary boundaries, ensuring a healthy future is ahead of us where our dreams can become a reality. Kindness and care comes without a price on this earth, so use this as an advantage towards the sustainability for your planet. Living sustainably is about doing more and better with less.
This event highlights that every action counts, and becoming an agent of care is important. Doing something you believe is a small contribution could make a huge impact on the future, so be not afraid of joining in with this public celebration!
For that extra bit of inspiration, the UN Secretary of World Environment Day, General Ban Ki-Moon, offers this quote for today’s event:
"Although individual decisions may seem small in the face of global threats and trends, when billions of people join forces in common purpose, we can make a tremendous difference.”
Through decades of celebrations, hundreds of thousands of people from countries all over the world and from all sectors of society have participated in individual and organised environmental action. Last years event received a total of 6,437 pledges and over 3,000 activities were registered online, resulting in a total of about 9,700 which is triple to the previous two years.
So let’s make this year even more successful. Think of your environment and think of everyone’s future.
