Canon’s recycling programme reaches 25th Year of Celebrations!

As some of you may know, Canon Europe are a very successful business and they are now celebrating the 25th anniversary of its laser toner cartridge recycling programme. This is an incredible achievement considering recycling is a very important factor for businesses dealing with a large amount of recyclable materials – however not everyone is recycling!

The Canon programme is available for genuine Canon toner cartridges and is designed to minimise the use of resources whilst enabling customers to meet their printing requirements. Even before they are designed, Canon’s cartridges keep recycling in mind all thanks to HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) plastic, which can be recycled multiple times and still achieve a quality level equivalent to if it was new.

Reusing parts, recycling materials and energy recovery all combine together to play a vital part in not sending waste to landfill from the cartridges - making it environmentally efficient. The cartridges that are returned by customers in Europe are sent to a place in France called Canon Bretagne SAS to which they are then processed in a closed loop of recycling to become the new cartridges.

A little fact for you now – Did you know Canon Europe were the first company to introduce a toner cartridge recycling programme? (And this was back in 1990!). Now, the programme, which is free for customers, successfully operates in 24 countries globally, of which 18 countries are in Europe. Up to the end of December 2014, Canon’s programme had collected approximately 344,000 tonnes of used toner cartridges, avoiding the need for around 232,000 tonnes of new raw materials and saving about 502,000 tonnes of CO2.

With those statistics, who wouldn't want to start recycling and contributing to making the environment better?

An inspiring fact about Canon is the fact they use a corporate philosophy called Kyosei – which means “living and working together for the common good”. With this in mind they completely nailed the recycling project, and even 25 years on they still have the same heartfelt passion for environmental care.

The focus on collecting and recycling toner cartridges forms part of Canon’s environmental vision and commitment to the circular economy – by enabling customers to benefit from technology for a lower environmental impact. In this case, this is achieved by reducing waste and reusing resources.

I think I can speak for many people and say that is a great achievement for them, so here’s hoping they take off their lens caps and capture this fantastic achievement on those high tech cameras - because here’s to another 25 years of recycling for Canon Europe!

I also hope this inspired you to start recycling, because it is an important thing to remember!

(If you deal with a lot of paperwork every day at work and choose to bin it, then perhaps create a recycling box to place next to your desk or work space - that way you'll always remember to help the environment)

Thanks for reading, folks!
